How to read a commercial insurance policy

A practical order of operations for a 100-page commercial PDF: declarations, form schedule, then the endorsements that actually change coverage.

Do not start on page 40

Commercial policies are assembled, not written as a novel. The insuring agreement in the middle of the PDF is not the first thing to read. Start with the declarations (or the workers compensation information page). Those pages name the insured, the term, the premium, and the limits.

Next, find the forms and endorsements schedule. That list is the policy. If a form number is missing from the schedule, it is not part of the contract, even if last year’s certificate mentioned it.

Match form numbers to names

ISO-style numbers look like CG 00 01, CP 10 30, or WC 00 03 13. The letters point to a line of business; the digits point to a specific chassis, endorsement, or exclusion. Coverbird keeps a catalog of those numbers so you can see the title without memorizing the coding system.

Carrier-specific forms use house numbers. Those are still real, but they will not match an ISO glossary. Photograph or export the schedule so the extractor can see both.

Read endorsements as changes, not as extra coverage

An additional-insured endorsement adds a person for a described exposure. An exclusion endorsement takes something back. A waiver of subrogation changes recovery rights. None of those pages is a promise that a claim will be paid, and none of them is advice to buy another policy.

When a contract asks for “additional insured, waiver, primary and noncontributory,” you are hunting three different pieces of wording, often three different form numbers.

Use the PDF as the source of truth

Certificates, broker summaries, and proposal decks are convenience documents. If they disagree with the declarations and the form schedule, the policy wins. Upload the policy if you want Coverbird to pull carrier, dates, limits, and matching form titles into one screen.

Coverbird reads the declarations and form schedule on the PDF you already have. It does not sell insurance or say whether a limit is enough.
